I have an HRV but no bath fan is this ok?

NBC allows for HRV’s to replace bath fans but in the past Builders did this to save money and did not properly size the system. Properly sized with bath timers this can be a good system.

My 20 year old HRV is not working can it be fixed?

Yes in most cases a 20 year old HRV can be fixed but before spending too much money on an HRV this old you should take a look at a new HRV.

Do I need a professional HRV service each year?

No most HRV’s only need the filters cleaned 2-4 times per year and the inside of the unit wiped out with vinegar and water.

Can I open my windows when my HRV is running?

Yes open your windows any time you like it will not affect HRV operation.

Do I need to clean my duct every year?

When should I get my duct work cleaned?

Ductwork gets dirty when the airflow is not capable of moving the dust all the way to the end a new blower motor or HRV will have more power and effectively clean your duct into your home.

Should I turn my HRV off in summer?

No When it is warmer outside then inside your home HRV’s will not remove moister but it will help remove odors, dust and bring in oxygen.

Should I get an HRV or ERV?

ERV’s offer no real benefit in Nova Scotia and tend to be overpriced. ERV’s are better suited to hot dry climates.

HRV’s are the most efficient way to remove harmful moister from your home.
